Ryan was born in Bozeman, Montana, but moved to Lake Tahoe in 1977, where he attended Incline elementary, middle, and high schools. He then attended college at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he graduated in 1995 with a degree in Criminal Justice. While in college he played for the golf team, earning All American honors his final year.
